Sophomore Class VP Runoff Election
07-08 Election Notes
Congrats to everyone that ran! Here is the election analysis compiled by the Election Committee:
Candidates were given one week to campaign, and elections occurred over three days, starting from Tuesday May 12 through Thursday May 15. Tuesday was a school day, while wednesday and thursday were STARR testing days. This allowed everyone who was not taking the STARR test to vote the first day, while allowing everyone excluding the seniors (who cannot vote) who did have STARR testing to vote. With each voting day, voter turnout decreased, yet in total, the turnout jumped from last year's 350 to 570, a 60% increase. The last voting day was interrupted by the fire alarm.
Things that went well
Campaigning:
-More candidates running for class positions
-Clean Campaigning
-Voice Coverage (Videos were informative and on time)
-Campaign guidelines mostly adhered to.
-1 Week campaign window good timing
Voting
-Voter turnout much higher
-Visibility of voting booths
-Sign-in system
-Election booths for privacy
-Timing-one all-school day, 2 starr test days.
Things that can be improved:
Campaigning:
-Reports of mudslinging by underclassmen candidates
-Voice coverage- Podcasts were very informative but came out the day
before elections
-Poster policy violations by candidates/supporters- Masking tape
instead of blue tape used, poster stapled to trees.
-Poster policy violations by administration- Posters that were
approved by ASB were taken down due to misunderstanding by
administration.
-Poster vandalism (general)
Voting:
-Overlapping highlights on the sign-in sheetsdue to attempts to
consolidate the two sign in sheets.
-Underclassmen did not follow voting guidelines- Scantron ballots
were marked with X's, in pen, folded.
-Scantron ballots not fully erased-Invalidated by scantron, yet were
refilled on new ballots and refed through machine.
07-08 Biographies
Mohammed Abid
Hi, my name is Mohammed Abid. I am a senior and the Student Body President at Paly. I’m looking to improve ASB and Paly in many ways: increase ASB support, reach out to the Paly community, host fun events (dances, rallies, etc.) My hobbies include playing sports, specifically running, basketball and football. I enjoy watching and participating in Paly sports and I am an avid Paly sports fan. Aside from watching TV, I enjoy leisurely reading, listening to music, and hanging out with my friends
Brooke Flohr
Hi, my name is Brooke Flohr and I am your new ASB Vice President. As
Vice President, I am able to cover for important jobs when the President
is unavailable, and I have the responsibility of being a leader and a
contributor to the school. Last year was a very successful year for Paly
ASB, but with an extra dance and an amazing prom on the way, we are
setting the bar even higher for this school year. A major goal of ASB
this year is to increase communication between ASB and the school
community, so hopefully you will be hearing more from us than you have
in the past. This is the year where you can really get your ideas
heard...even freshmen! Just so you know a little about me, I grew up in
New York, love pizza, love tennis, and I know I am going to love this
school year, and hopefully you will too!
Kristen Witte
I'm Kristen Witte and I am Paly's current ASB Secretary and I take
minutes and attendance at meetings.
Bowen Wang
Hey everyone, I am Bowen Wang and I am your ASB Treasurer. As ASB
Treasurer, I review all ASB receipts and disbursements with the ASB
Bookkeeper (Auditor), prepare monthly reports for the student council on
the ASB bank balances and receipts and disbursements to date, keep
accurate profit and loss statements of all ASB functions and assist
classes and clubs in keeping accurate records, supervise the preparation
of the annual ASB budget, update the ASB budget monthly, and sign all
ASB check requests and purchase orders. Besides being in ASB, I am in
Paly Band and Paly Science Olympiad Team, which has gone to regional,
states, and nationals, even though Campy only mentions the negative side
of SciOly. Let's have a really cool year!
Jon Shan
Hi everyone, this is Jon Shan, your ASB Tech Communications Officer. I
am looking forward to an awesome year serving all of you. My role has
included the creation of this website, the creation of the ASB
Activities Update Facebook group, the installation of plasma TV in the
student center ( no it isn't connected to the outside world
unfortunately due to cost, but we will have a movie day every week),
publishing the Viking Call (a school newsletter), and much more. My
goals for the upcoming school year will be to maintain clear
communication between students and the ASB leadership, as well as
preventing misperceptions by the school media about the policies and
actions carried out by ASB. So, if you have read this far, you are
probably wondering why I am a nut about ASB leadership. It is because I
believe in change. Everyone elected advocates changes for the better. I
was appointed. No incentive to change how things work? nope! I have been
the critic of the ASB leadership for a long time, and like you, a cynic
that things can be done. That is, until I joined up and made changes
myself. I challenge you as my fellow students to do the same, and if not
join, participate to make your school, your spirit rallies, your dances,
your prom, and your life at Paly the best it can be. Got something you
are unsatisfied with? Check out the Contacts page of the website, and
shoot me or anyone else an email. Catch me at school, give me a heads
up, and I'll make your voice heard in the bureaucracy of it all. I look
forward to a great year, and I hope you will too!
Kairen Wong
I'm Kairen Wong and I am Paly's current PAUSD School Board Student
Representative. I attend School Board meetings every Tuesday. The
agendas for meetings are available at
http://www.pausd.org/community/board/agenda.shtml
If you have opinions on agenda items, feel free to contact me.
Neal Ketchum
Hi I’m Neal Ketchum, I am one of the Spirit Commissioners. I play

voice my opinions and improve the student government at Paly. I
look forward to planning events at Paly and meeting students from other
ASB governments in the Bay Area. I love Pearl tea.
Morgan Pichinson
Hi! I’m Morgan, I’m a senior at PALY
and I am one of your spirit commissioners. I am very involved in spirit
at PALY, being in student government and cheerleading. My goal is to
unite PALY students, get them more involved in school activities and
even more involved in spirit. My favorite food, by far, is pasta. I am a
very talkative and outgoing person once you get to know me. If my
friends were to describe me in one word it would be creative. I LOVE
PALY! Woot Woot!
Dom Powell
I'm Dom Powell, the 2007-08 Athletics Commissioner here at Paly. My job
is to discuss and do my best to improve the attendance and spirit at our
school sporting events. I'm a new member to the ASB and one thing I want
to accomplish this year is to make it the most memorable year ever.
Aside from that, I play football, basketball, and I high jump for Paly.
I like to cook in my free time and I love French and Italian food.
Helene Zahoudanis
Hey Paly, my name is Helene Zahoudanis. Chris
Wycoff and I are your two social commissioners. Our role in ASB is to
plan dances and other fun Paly activities and ultimately help Paly to
maintain a warmer and friendlier environment. Chris and I, along with
the rest of ASB, hope to make everyone’s 07-08 the best it can possibly
be. We are thinking of more social activities and planning on becoming
more in touch with the student body and trying to fulfill YOUR desires.
Anyway, I’m required to give a little background info on my self so here
goes: I play both school and club volleyball, club lacrosse (Tomahawks),
and am hoping to have some time to run track this year. We, (the
Towahwaks team) are fighting hard to start a lacrosse program here at
Paly by spring 08, but we’ll see. I basically LOVE all food, especially
fruit. I have to admit though, I’m definitely a softy for chocolate.
What else…I basically always laugh and smile- life’s too short, no?
Chris Wycoff
My names Chris Wycoff and I’m 1 of the
2 social commissioners at PALY. My job is to encourage activities that
are fun and improve social interaction within students. So basically im
in charge of making PALY’s Dance’s and rallies and any other events kick
Butt. I’m I7 years old and have lived in Palo Alto for the last 10
years. My hobbies include surfing, running, and magic. I hope to serve
PALY to the best of my abilities. I’m sure this year will be full of fun
and learning. But mostly fun.

our class so not only will we be seniors, we'll feel like seniors too! I
was Junior Class President last year and enjoyed the changes we had made
so much I felt I could go even further with this position. My goals for
this year are to provide more interaction and communication between
student government and the student body. We were elected by you to make
your year positive so the work we put into making these changes are all
for you. I would love to have everyone involved and know about
everything we do in student government. I am a Paly Cheerleader and
extremely dedicated to promoting (even more) spirit at paly. In my extra

on the varsity volleyball team and play the piano. I hope that this year
we can have an amazing spirit week as well as senior year in general.

junior class site council representative. My job is to help the junior
class president and vp, and to attend meetings that work to make the
students voices heard and strengthen the communication between the
administration and the student body. I was a sophomore class
representative last year and really enjoyed being a part of the class.

year possible. Besides being in ASB I am a cheerleader at Paly (Go
Vikings!!!!!) and I also rides horses competitively. I pretty much love

Charlie Lin
Hello – I’m Charlie Lin and I
am the sophomore vice-president this year. I joined ASB in hopes of
giving everyone in the Paly community the chance to have their say in
student government, and I hope contribute to ASB in a way that will lead
to the most successful year yet. If I have free time, I enjoy playing
basketball, hanging out with friends, reading, eating, sleeping,
Facebooking, juggling (I’m working on four right now), and Rubik’s
cubing (that was more last year…I haven’t touched mine for a few weeks
now).
I’m on the Paly Debate team and I have a ton of other extra-curricular to ensure I’m always sleep-deprived. Feel free to approach me with any ideas you may have regarding ASB, and I’ll make sure your voice is heard.

year on ASB.

ASB was to ensure that we all have a great time this year and also
to help maintain Paly’s strong sense of pride, by doing things such
as planning various activities. In my free time, I love to play
guitar (I’m in a band, you might catch us around campus), read, play
tennis, and hang out with friends. I’ve had prior experience with

great one, so GO VIKINGS!

one, with plenty of school spirit.
